Anticipation Builds for PS5 Pro

Rumors about the PS5 Pro are spreading like wildfire. Most recently, it was revealed that the console is likely to be released during the holiday season of 2024. One of the intriguing features expected in the PS5 Pro is the “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” though its exact function remains a mystery.

Many have labeled the PS5 Pro as “the most powerful console yet,” but experts from Digital Foundry have expressed skepticism. They suggest that the PS5 Pro may not live up to its “pro” label, especially when it comes to running the most anticipated game of next year.

Is the PS5 Pro Really That Pro?

Rich Leadbetter, the founder of Digital Foundry, has analyzed the reported specs of the PS5 Pro. He noted that the console’s CPU is essentially the same as the base version, both containing an eight-core 16 Thread Zen 2 with clock speeds of up to 3.5GHz. The PS5 Pro’s CPU, however, has a “High CPU Frequency Mode,” which allows the chip to increase its performance by 10 percent, to 3.85GHz.

Despite some differences, such as the PS5 Pro having 33.5 teraflops compared to the PS5's 10.28 teraflops, Leadbetter expressed concerns about the similar CPU performances of the two consoles when it comes to producing better frame rates.

Performance Expectations for PS5 Pro

Leadbetter explained that games targeting 30fps now will not target 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 5 Pro if they’re CPU-limited. He dismissed the idea that the PS5 Pro will be a game-changer for running Grand Theft Auto 6 at 60 frames per second, unless Rockstar implements some unique CPU enhancements. Leadbetter concluded that a 10 percent increase in clock speed would not significantly improve frame rates when CPU-limited.

PS5 Pro: A Worthy Upgrade?

According to Digital Foundry, the PS5 Pro’s superior processing power may not significantly impact actual game performance. This might cause console gamers considering a switch to PC gaming to reconsider. However, the minor improvement over the base PS5’s CPU performance might not persuade current PS5 owners to upgrade.

Still, the PS5 Pro’s advanced hardware does have its advantages. With Sony’s exclusive PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaling technology, the console will be able to render games at 4K, with support for 8K and higher resolutions possible through machine learning. However, the timing of the console’s release seems odd, as Sony isn’t releasing any “new major existing franchise” games until 2025.

While the PS5 Pro's details have been widely discussed, Sony has yet to officially confirm its existence, let alone the validity of the reported specs. Reportedly, the company has launched an internal investigation into the leaks to find the source.
