Stray Souls Developer Jukai Studio Shuts Down

Just a mere two months after the release of the third-person action-horror game, Stray Souls, Jukai Studio has closed its doors. The studio cites multiple issues, including disappointing game sales and ongoing cyberattacks from an unidentified source.

The studio made the announcement of its sudden closure on December 22 via Twitter, stating that the poor reception and sales of Stray Souls had left them unable to sustain the company.

More on Stray Souls

Stray Souls, the studio’s debut project that follows a man uncovering the secrets of a haunted town, launched on October 25. Despite the efforts of the small team, the game received harsh reviews on Metacritic and OpenCritic.

In a statement, Jukai Studio shared, "We did everything in our power to bring [Stray Souls] to completion in the best possible form, but we, our publisher staff, other publisher teams, and our close ones were constantly attacked by a cyber persecutor." The studio also acknowledged that their community had been troubled with unwanted messages and emails.

Other Closures

Interestingly, Jukai Studio’s closure came the same day as its publisher Versus Evil, the company behind the successful tactical RPG franchise The Banner Saga, also shut down. This happened just three months after its 10-year anniversary. As a result, everyone who worked at Versus Evil was laid off.

Despite Jukai Studio closing its doors, no one has been technically laid off because, as the team said, the developer “never functioned as a large corporation."
