A Recap: Video Games That Reached Their End in 2023

As we move towards the end of 2023, it's time to take a look back at the video games that were taken offline this year. The total count has now reached 60, with six new additions to our list of games that met their untimely end in 2023.

Gran Turismo Sport

Starting off our list is Gran Turismo Sport. The PlayStation 4 game’s online features will be discontinued on January 31, 2024, as announced by developer Polyphony Digital on September 29. The decision also includes discontinuing all DLC sales for the 2017 racing sim from December 1. As the game was primarily an online experience, this leaves players with a limited single-player campaign and a few other races.

Only Up!

Next on our list is Only Up! This platformer, developed by SCKR Games, was a big hit earlier this year. Unfortunately, it had to be pulled offline due to a copyright dispute. The game made a brief comeback, but was finally pulled from digital stores for good in early September by the solo developer.

Quantum League

The third game on our list is Quantum League. This time-bending PvP arena shooter's servers will be shut down on December 15, ending more than two years of development. By mid-December, Quantum League will be completely removed from Steam and will no longer be playable.

Second Extinction

Next up is Second Extinction, an open-world co-op dino shooter by developer Systemic Reaction. It was removed from Steam and Xbox on October 16. The developers cited unforeseen issues that prevented the game from moving out of its early access and game preview states. Despite having a passionate fanbase, the game didn't achieve the success the developers had hoped for. The online servers will remain active for the time being, but the plan is to eventually pull them offline.

Side Bullet

The next game, Side Bullet, was developed by PressA and was pulled offline on November 27. The free-to-play side-scrolling shooter, which was a PlayStation 5 exclusive, was removed due to internal circumstances.

Space Punks

Finally, we have Space Punks. Further details about the game's discontinuation are yet to be revealed.

It's always a sad day when a game is taken offline, especially when it has a dedicated fanbase. Here's hoping 2024 brings fewer game discontinuations.
