Reflecting on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Legacy
A snapshot in a scrapbook reveals Nemona, Shep, Arven, Penny, and Miraidon. Pokémon's broad franchise, comprising games, anime, trading cards, lifestyle merchandise, is largely defined by Game Freak’s video games. The likes of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have shaped our perception of different Pokémon generations. A year after its turbulent release, it's time to ponder on the legacy of Scarlet and Violet in the Pokémon series’ history. It’s disheartening, but it's hard to deny that no other game has so vividly encapsulated both the franchise's breathtaking ambition and the challenges it needs to surmount.

Realizing a Childhood Dream with Pokémon
Scarlet and Violet were the first bona fide open-world Pokémon games. Despite Legends: Arceus offering open environments to explore, Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea region is a continuous world that can be explored without a loading screen. There’s a certain magic in flying around a Pokémon world, seeing different creatures bustling about, and directly engaging in battles and captures without the hindrance of menus and obstacles that marred previous games.
Experiencing Paldea’s Open World
Part of the magic of these games comes from experiencing Paldea’s open world with friends. The ability to play with up to three friends, roam freely in a Pokémon world without interruption, battle, trade, and explore together, is the realization of a childhood dream.
Creating Memories with Pokémon
Some of my most cherished gaming memories over the past year have come from joining with friends or my brother to experience the Pokémon journey I had always imagined. My Switch’s screenshot folder is brimming with selfies and impromptu photoshoots of my friends discovering Paldea, capturing Pokémon and uncovering its secrets together.
Scarlet and Violet: A Communal Experience
Large-scale video games like Scarlet and Violet are inherently a communal experience. We gather on voice calls and social media to share our discoveries and experiences. Scarlet and Violet are the most community-oriented Pokémon games since Pokémon Go. We can now share our experiences and discoveries together in the same open world. Pokémon has always advocated that the journey is best when shared, and Scarlet and Violet have reinforced that this should be a virtue expressed in the games beyond just training and battling.
