Victory celebrations can take many forms. Some might jump for joy, others might spray champagne like a victorious NFL player. But for a certain 48-year-old Xiangqi (Chinese chess) champion, his celebration took a rather peculiar turn.

Unexpected Turn of Events

Yan Chenglong, a Xiangqi player, recently won a major tournament. His victory was so grand, it earned him the title of "Xiangqi King" and a grand prize of 100,000 yuan (approximately $14,150 USD). However, it was his post-victory behavior that caught everyone's attention.

Controversial Accusations

Following his victory, Chenglong was accused of using an unconventional method to gain an unfair advantage. Allegedly, he used a device to share data about the chessboard with a remote computer. The device was supposedly found in an unusual location - the bathtub of his hotel room.

Official Response

The Chinese Xiangqi Association responded to the allegations, stating that their investigation did not yield any concrete evidence of cheating. They did, however, condemn Chenglong's behavior, describing it as damaging to hotel property and a violation of public order and good morals.

Consequences of Actions

Despite the lack of proof of cheating, Chenglong faced severe repercussions for his actions. The governing body stripped him of his title, forced him to forfeit a portion of his earnings, and banned him from participating in any Chinese chess competitions for one year.

Previous Scandals

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the chess world. In the United States, Grandmaster Hans Niemann was accused of using a similar method to gain an unfair advantage in a match against World Champion Magnus Carlsen. The case was eventually settled in August 2023.
