Decisions That Shape Your Journey in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Decisions That Shape Your Journey in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the latest installment in BioWare’s fantasy RPG series. This game is changing how players carry over choices from previous games. Unlike before, where you could import your world state, The Veilguard simplifies the process by focusing on a few key decisions. This makes it easier for players to jump into the new story without worrying about every small choice they made in past games.

Key Decisions in The Veilguard

In an interview, creative director John Epler explained that The Veilguard will ask players about three key decisions. This streamlining allows the team to meaningfully represent those choices. Much of the game takes place in the northern regions of the series' world, making many past decisions less relevant.

Here are the key decisions that carry over:

  • Friendship and Romance: Who did your Inquisitor have a romantic relationship with in Inquisition?
  • The Fate of the Inquisition: Did you disband the Inquisition or surrender control to the church?
  • The Hidden God: How did you handle Solas, the elven god known as the Dread Wolf?

Friendship and Romance

This decision is straightforward. In The Veilguard, you’ll be asked who your Inquisitor romanced in Inquisition. The game will respect the restrictions from Inquisition, so certain relationships will not be possible based on your character’s gender and race. If your Inquisitor didn’t romance anyone, you can also choose that option.

The Fate of the Inquisition

This choice refers to the events of the Trespasser DLC. At the end of the expansion, players had to decide whether to disband the Inquisition or surrender control to the church. Both choices have their pros and cons, and this decision will impact your Veilguard playthrough.

The Hidden God

In Trespasser, the Inquisitor meets Solas, who plans to tear down the Veil. Players could choose to either stop him by any means necessary or find a way to save him. This decision will determine whether your old hero views Solas as a friend or a threat in The Veilguard.

Why Northern Thedas?

One reason for moving the story to Northern Thedas is to provide a clean slate. This allows the developers to avoid contradicting past choices. While not every decision from previous games will be referenced, they won’t be invalidated either.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 31. We had the chance to play seven hours of the game, and it looks promising.
