The inaugural Gyakuten Saiban game, better known as Ace Attorney, made its debut in Japan on the Game Boy Advance platform. Gamers took on the role of an inexperienced lawyer, Ryūichi Naruhodō, or Phoenix Wright, as he is known in English versions, navigating through complex legal cases by identifying contradictions in testimonies, presenting precarious evidence, and employing dramatic court-room theatrics. The Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, which includes the series' fourth to sixth games: Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies, and Spirit of Justice. Hsu, who has been part of the localization team since 2007's Justice for All, shares her insights on the series, its quirky characters, and its growing appeal.
Hsu, who prefers they/them pronouns, joined Capcom in 2005. They recall that during the early days, games often camouflaged their Japanese origins to appeal to English-speaking audiences. The Japanese version of Ace Attorney, set in modern Japan, was relocated to Los Angeles in the 2005 localization, without modifying culturally specific references. This led to the creation of a unique blend of Los Angeles and Japanese cultures, affectionately referred to as Japanifornia by fans.

The renaming of Naruhodo to Phoenix in the 2005 English translation has led to a ripple effect of Greek naming motifs in the series, a testament to the team's creative liberties.
