Diablo 4's Runewords: Transforming Your Gameplay Strategy

Diablo 4's Runewords: Transforming Your Gameplay Strategy

Diablo IV has introduced a thrilling new feature called Runewords in the Vessel of Hatred expansion. This mechanic allows you to customize your loot by adding conditional buffs. These buffs let you borrow abilities from other classes, enhancing your gameplay experience. Runewords are socketable items that can be found throughout the game, dropped by enemies and hidden in chests. Let's dive into how you can find, build, and use these game-changing Runewords.

What Are Runewords?

Runewords are unique stones that you can slot into your equipment to gain skills typically exclusive to other classes. They are found in the Socketables tab of your inventory and consist of two parts: the Rune of Ritual and the Rune of Invocation. When combined, they offer a variety of bonus effects, making them a versatile addition to your arsenal.

Building Runewords

To create a Runeword, you need a piece of equipment with two empty sockets. The top half of the Runeword is a yellow Rune of Ritual, which specifies an action you must take. For example, the Rune "Zan" requires you to cast an Ultimate skill.

  • Rune of Ritual: Yellow, specifies the action needed.
  • Rune of Invocation: Purple, specifies the reward for the action.

The bottom half, the Rune of Invocation, is purple and determines the reward for completing the specified action. For instance, the Rune "Ton" invokes the Sorcerer's Meteorites, dealing damage to enemies.

Using Runewords

Once you've placed both the Rune of Ritual and Rune of Invocation in your item, a purple icon will appear above your action bar. This icon indicates the progress towards completing the Runeword action. If multiple actions are required, the icon will fill up as you make progress.

For example, with the Runeword "CemTal," using Evade once fills the icon halfway. Using Evade again will activate the Runeword, casting Pestilent Swarm. If the icon doesn't appear, visit the Jeweler to unsocket the Runes and try again.

Finding More Runes

Runes can be found as loot from enemies, chests, and other sources. With a wide variety of Runes available, you can experiment to discover the combinations that best suit your playstyle. Happy hunting!
