Exploring the Universe of Quels in Gaming
Quels often feel like they are integral components of a larger universe of franchises. However, there are always exceptions to this rule.
A perfect example of this is Project Birdseye, a new top-down roguelike action game from Striking Distance Studios. Interestingly, this upcoming game is a spin-off of 2022’s Callisto Protocol, a game that bears a striking resemblance to Dead Space.
Is Alan Wake Worth Playing Before Its Sequel?
For those who have been following the Alan Wake franchise, a common question arises - is it worth playing the original before diving into the sequel? There are varying opinions on this topic, and it's always a good idea to explore these before making a decision.
Remember Callisto Protocol?
First announced in 2020, Callisto Protocol was a creepy space game developed by Striking Distance Studios, led by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. Initially part of the PUBG universe, it eventually became a standalone game by the time it launched in 2022.
Despite mixed reviews and subpar sales, coupled with complaints of performance issues, the Callisto Protocol universe isn't entirely dead. In fact, the next game set in this horror franchise promises to be very different from its predecessor.
Project Birdseye: A New Direction
On March 19, Striking Distance Studios unveiled one of their current projects, Project Birdseye. Set in the same universe as their debut 2022 horror game, this new, colorful top-down roguelike action game appears to have more in common with Hades or Hi-Fi Rush than Dead Space and Resident Evil.
As the developers explained in the debut trailer, Project Birdseye is not Callisto Protocol 2. It's an early glimpse at a game still in development that aims to "expand the world" of the franchise. The name is merely an internal project codename that will change in the future.
The Advantage of Big Teams Making Small Games
Striking Distance Studios claims that Project Birdseye will allow the team to "stretch our creative muscles on something a bit different" without interfering with their ongoing development of a larger, AAA video game.
There's something intriguing about large teams being given the space, time, and resources to create smaller games and experiment with different concepts. As the cost of developing video games continues to rise, and the risk of one title failing and bringing down an entire team becomes more palpable, this might be the way forward.
By allowing teams to experiment with smaller ideas on smaller budgets, it creates an opportunity for success without the high stakes. If a game becomes a hit, it generates revenue and keeps the company running. If it fails, it's not a huge loss, and the team gains valuable experience for future projects. Plus, fans get to enjoy a variety of different, smaller games more frequently. It's a win/win situation for all involved!
