The Game Awards: A Night of Reveals

The recent Game Awards was a spectacle of upcoming games, spanning over three and a half hours. With so many announcements, it's easy to miss some key reveals.

One game you should look out for is Team Ninja's Rise of the Ronin, which showcased a new gameplay trailer, introducing us to its combat and characters. The studio announced that the game will launch on March 22 for PS5.

Rise of the Ronin: A Closer Look

The new trailer for Rise of the Ronin is filled with emotion and action, much like the great samurai stories we know and love. It gives us a glimpse of a war between factions causing chaos and destruction, with historical figures making cameo appearances.

Throughout the trailer, there are talks of time's perpetual march, violence for ideals, and "altering the river's flow", against a backdrop of explosions, fire, and clashing steel. It's a thrilling preview of what's to come.

What to Expect from the Gameplay

From what we can gather, the gameplay is reminiscent of Ghost of Tsushima and Nioh, set in an open-world environment similar to Ubisoft's style. According to Team Ninja, Rise of the Ronin is their "biggest game to date".

Our protagonist, presumably the ronin, navigates through dark caves to combat armored warriors, performs katana takedowns across villages, and parries steel before using various guns. It's very much like Nioh 2, which is no surprise as Team Ninja developed both games.

However, instead of sticking to the Souls genre, Team Ninja gives us 19th-century Edo Japan to explore. And we're more than ready to dive in.

The Story Behind Rise of the Ronin

Fumihiko Yasuda, Team Ninja director and president, shared more about the narrative of Rise of the Ronin. The game is set during the final moments of the Tokugawa Shogunate, a period marked by stagnation and oppression.

The protagonist, somehow linked to many iconic figures of the era, will make decisions that align with or rebel against these characters and their allegiances.

Weaponry in Rise of the Ronin

While Rise of the Ronin is a samurai story, swords aren't your only weapons. As the game is set during the end of the Edo period, players will have access to an assortment of guns, from rapid-firing pistols to matchlock-looking rifles.

Yasuda mentioned there's a "wide range" of gear in the game, including a grappling hook and hang glider for stealth takedowns and quick travel.
