FLCL: Unwanted Grunge Anime's Debut Falls Flat

Revisiting the FLCL Universe with a Fresh Perspective in FLCL: Grunge

A fresh perspective on the iconic character Haruko from the anime series FLCL: Grunge is offered by overlaying the new design on top of her original anime appearance. This anime, also known as Fooly Cooly, is a product of the early 2000s. Its captivating art direction, fast-paced action sequences, and memorable alternative rock soundtrack make it a cult classic. The storyline of this anime is famously convoluted, adding to the appeal of the show with its dreamlike quality and teenage angst.

Exploring Further into the FLCL Universe

Despite the intriguing original series, subsequent seasons like FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative failed to rekindle the magic. These follow-ups led to a mixed reception when FLCL: Grunge announced its intention to continue the series and act as a prequel to the original storyline. The new season aims to answer long-standing series questions and expand upon the narrative rather than merely echoing the original.

Introducing New Characters in FLCL: Grunge

The story of FLCL: Grunge revolves around Shinpachi, a teenager working at his father's sushi restaurant. His life takes an interesting turn when he crosses paths with Haruko, the series' enigmatic alien protagonist, disguised as a call girl. After a series of bizarre incidents, Shinpachi develops a lump on his forehead, mirroring the series' original protagonist, Naota Nandaba. The size of the lump increases whenever Haruko flirts or strikes a provocative pose, symbolizing Shinpachi's sexual awakening.

Speculations and Predictions

While it remains unclear whether Shinpachi's forehead lump will serve the same purpose as Naota's, the season premiere leaves clues about Haruko's interaction with the robots of the mysterious corporation, Medical Mechanica. This interaction may have initiated the virus that affected the factory's robots, as suggested in the previous season, FLCL: Progressive. As FLCL: Grunge is a prequel, it is anticipated that the series will finally reveal Haruko's objectives.

An Overview of FLCL: Grunge's Animation and Storyline

Despite the shift from studios Gainax and Production I.G to the new studio MonteBlanc Pictures, FLCL: Grunge's CGI animation supplemented with 2D animation doesn't feel out of place. The animation effectively highlights the series' psychosexual concepts and phallic innuendos. However, it lacks the dynamic energy of the original series' hand-drawn animations. Despite this, FLCL: Grunge's animation doesn't fall short when compared to other anime like Trigun: Stam. The storyline, however, is considered too derivative, making it less compelling than the original series.
