Review of Fae Farm by Kotaku: A Comprehensive Look

My Take on Phoenix Labs' Fae Farm

While I may not be the primary audience for every game, I find Phoenix Labs' life simulation role-playing game, Fae Farm, quite appealing. Released on Switch and PC on September 8, this game is a perfect fit for fans of tranquil and straightforward "cozy gaming". Being a female gamer, this genre resonates with me. Fae Farm immerses you in an enchanting world of fairy magic where you play the role of a traveler on a mission to rejuvenate a far-off island. This premise is quite appealing, much like my affection for Robert Redford in Barefoot in the Park or my penchant for extravagant haircuts.

The Downside of Fae Farm

However, Fae Farm seems to undermine the uniqueness of female gamers by replicating most features from previous life simulation games. The game seems to suggest that female gamers are content with repetitive farming mechanics and mandatory marriage.

First Impressions of Fae Farm

Despite my reservations, I found the character creation process in Fae Farm to be quite delightful. As I experimented with various skin tones and hairstyles, my character couldn't stop giggling – a touch I found both annoying and charming. However, I was quickly disenchanted when I realized that Fae Farm, much like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, borrowed heavily from its predecessors. This redundancy gave me an uncanny sense of déjà vu.

The Gameplay Experience

Similar to other games in the genre, Fae Farm involves creating and maintaining farmland, interacting with island dwellers, and purchasing useful items. The game also offers engaging side quests that introduce new gameplay features. Additionally, Fae Farm incorporates skills familiar to life sims, such as fishing, mining, bug-catching, and cooking.

Easy Mode Activated

However, unlike other games, Fae Farm's activities are not as challenging. This easiness, while attractive at first, soon becomes monotonous. Capturing a queen bee or fishing for a rare catch seems too easy. In essence, if you see it, you can get it.

Time for a Reality Check

The appeal of life simulation games lies in their escapist nature. They allow us to take a break from our daily chores and immerse ourselves in a world of our making. However, Fae Farm, with its repetitive and oversimplified tasks, feels excessively familiar. And while the fairy magic element adds a unique touch, it does little to differentiate Fae Farm from other games in the genre.
