15 Overlooked Details in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Trailer
- Elden Ring's Miquella and his cocoon
- New trailer begins with Miquella's cocoon
- Expansive space in the DLC map
- Shrouded Haligtree and possible parallel universe
- Poison swamp in the DLC
Elden Ring's Miquella and His Cocoon
In the core Elden Ring game, we discover that Miquella is the twin brother of Malenia, cursed with immortality. Miquella, in an attempt to age with the Haligtree and to save Malenia from Scarlet Rot, encapsulated himself in a cocoon. However, the cocoon was stolen by Mohg, a boss character in the game.
The New Trailer Begins
The trailer opens with the Tarnished in the same location where Mohg was fought, followed by a close-up of Miquella's cocoon. As Iron Pineapple, a YouTuber, accurately forecasted in April 2022, the cocoon and the "withered arm" alluded to in the trailer are the starting points for the DLC. To enter the Shadow of the Erdtree land, you must interact with the cocoon.
Expansive Space
The Tarnished is shown riding a horse through a field filled with ethereal tombstones. According to Miyazaki, the DLC map will be similar in size, if not larger, than Limgrave, the first place you visit in Elden Ring. The shot of the Tarnished riding through a vast field of ghostly tombstones gives a visual clue of the DLC's size. The tombstones also bear a striking resemblance to the spectral jellyfish in the main game, which symbolize the souls of children trapped in a sort of purgatory.
The Shrouded Haligtree
At first glance, this appears to be a shrouded Erdtree. However, upon closer inspection, it seems to resemble more closely the Haligtree that Miquella tried to create as a sanctuary from the Erdtree, its doctrines, and its followers. The shadow draped over it may suggest a parallel universe, but the golden sap leaking from it doesn't bode well for this world.
A Young Rennala?
Doesn't this resemble Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon and one of the main bosses? Rennala led the Raya Lucaria mage academy and its Glintstone Knights before the events of Elden Ring. When Marika sent a champion named Radagon to battle Rennala and her Academy, he fell in love with her instead. They married, combining Marika's Erdtree house and Rennala's Moon house. Rennala and Radagon had three children: Rykard, Radahn, and Ranni. Radagon then left Rennala to become Marika's second husband, shattering the Queen's heart and mind. Could this be Queen Rennala before the heartbreak and the fall of the Academy?
Poison Swamp
We all know that Miyazaki loves his poison swamps. When questioned by Eurogamer about whether the DLC will include poison swamps, his response was affirmative. He admitted to enjoying creating poisoned swamps only after making the base game. This led him to introspection and reflection. Thus, players might feel a bit of this introspection when they reach the poisoned swamp in the DLC.
Mysterious, but Important, People
Based on this painting's appearance in the trailer—just as the voiceover says "the Erdtree Faithful"—these could be two demigods or Marika loyalists. It's likely you'll encounter or have to fight them, perhaps in a place similar to Volcano Manor, where several portraits of significant characters are found.
Perhaps Farum Azula?
