StarCraft Shooter in the Works with Far Cry's Dan Hay

StarCraft Shooter in the Works with Far Cry's Dan Hay

Blizzard is making another attempt to develop a StarCraft shooter. This time, Dan Hay, former executive producer of Far Cry, is leading the project. Hay joined Blizzard in 2022 and brings a wealth of experience from his time at Ubisoft.

This news follows Microsoft's announcement of StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection coming to Game Pass in November. It seems Blizzard is keen on keeping the StarCraft universe alive and expanding.

Blizzard's Third Attempt

According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who discussed the project on IGN's Podcast Unlocked, Blizzard is indeed working on a StarCraft shooter. Schreier mentioned this in his new book, "PLAY NICE: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment."

Schreier noted that Blizzard has a rocky history with StarCraft shooters. Their previous attempts, StarCraft: Ghost and a project codenamed Ares, were both canceled.

StarCraft: Ghost and Ares

StarCraft: Ghost was announced in 2002 and was supposed to be a tactical action game for consoles. However, it was canceled in 2006 after several delays.

The second attempt, codenamed Ares, aimed to be a Battlefield-like game set in the StarCraft universe. This too was canceled in 2019 as Blizzard shifted focus to Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Third Time's the Charm?

Now, Blizzard is trying once more. Although details are scarce, the fact that Microsoft Gaming's Phil Spencer wore a StarCraft t-shirt during the Tokyo Game Show 2024 might hint at something significant.

Dan Hay's involvement adds more excitement. He has a strong track record, having worked on titles like Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, and Far Cry 5. His experience could be the key to finally bringing a StarCraft shooter to life.

Conclusion

Blizzard's persistence in developing a StarCraft shooter shows their dedication to the franchise. While previous attempts have failed, there's hope that this time it will be different with Dan Hay at the helm.
