Former Mayor Sentenced for Threatening Pokémon GO Players

Former Pennsylvania Mayor Faces Jail Time for Threatening Pokémon GO Enthusiasts

Clearfield County Prison

On December 11, a former city mayor in Pennsylvania was sentenced to jail after threatening and firing shots at individuals playing the popular mobile game, Pokémon GO, outside a community food bank last year.

What Led to the Incident?

On the night of March 14, 2022, the intoxicated former Osceola Mills mayor, Ida Reams, 52, dialed 911 to report that two individuals in her vicinity seemed suspicious. Reams informed the police that she was fed up with harassment and demanded immediate police intervention, threatening to harm the two individuals. The police reportedly heard two gunshots before the call ended.

What Happened Next?

Simultaneously, a second 911 call from one of the two individuals that Reams was upset about was received. The man explained that he and his friend were playing Pokémon GO in the area when a clearly inebriated Reams confronted them. After they left, Reams followed them in her truck and cornered them in a food bank parking lot. The police arrived shortly after and arrested Reams.

Legal Consequences

Witnesses confirmed that Reams fired at least five shots from a revolver. The former mayor was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, and DUI. As reported by ABC 27 on Tuesday, Reams was sentenced to up to one year in jail plus 18 months of probation through a plea deal.

Complications in the Case

The case was complicated due to the two victims not appearing in court and the fact that Reams has cancer. She claims that the disease is spreading and that she wishes to serve her time at home where she feels she can access necessary medications.

Pokémon GO and Criminal Incidents

This is not the first time that the popular mobile AR game, Pokémon GO, has been linked to criminal incidents. Recently, dashcam footage emerged of two police officers in 2017 disregarding their radio to catch rare Pokémon creatures. The two LAPD officers were later fired.
