The Arkham Trilogy's Arrival on Nintendo Switch: A Letdown?

The Arkham Trilogy, an incredible gaming package spanning two console generations and six years of evolving metroidvania sandbox design, was eagerly anticipated to be released on Nintendo Switch. However, the final outcome seems to be a huge disappointment. The initial footage of the games running on Nintendo's hybrid handheld device appears, to put it mildly, rough.

A Disaster of a Port: Digital Foundry's Analysis

Video game rendering experts, Digital Foundry, released their in-depth analysis of the Batman simulators ported by Turn Me Up and deemed them as an "absolute disaster". While it's not surprising that Batman: Arkham Knight, a PS4/Xbox One blockbuster with a vast open world and a speedy tank, may struggle on older hardware, it seems even Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, games from the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, disappoint on the Switch.

Arkham Knight: A Detailed Look

Focusing on Arkham Knight, the 2015 game was an expansion of everything developer Rocksteady Studios had been building in the first two games, and for the most part, was better. However, Digital Foundry's video details significant pop-in and framerate drops as Batman flies around the map. Visual stutters become even more prevalent when driving around Gotham in the tank-like Batmobile, making game play challenging at times. Batman appears to jerk around at points when the game falls out of sync with the moving camera.

Visual Quality: A Significant Downgrade

It appears that the game doesn't look very good either. Digital Foundry labels it an "unattractive game", with several visual compromises. The lack of texture detail, ambient occlusion, and enemy activity on the streets makes the overall world feel more dead than the atmospheric Gotham sandbox players love. In handheld mode, the resolution is just 540p. Recommending Arkham Knight on Switch would be akin to suggesting a friend watch The Dark Knight on a bootleg VHS.

Arkham Asylum and Arkham City: Not Without Issues

Despite being older, Arkham Asylum (2009) and Arkham City (2011) have their problems too. The Switch Trilogy versions seem to be based on the old PC versions and are missing some visual upgrades in lighting and other details added in the PS4 and Xbox One Return to Arkham remasters. The games don’t seem noticeably worse visually than their original counterparts, but the framerate remains a big issue, frequently dipping into the mid-20s. Asylum appears to run worse than City, which seems to be an adequate port, all things considered.

Final Thoughts on the Arkham Trilogy on Switch

It's disappointing that the Batman: Arkham Trilogy has issues on Switch, especially for the oldest game in the bunch. The bundle was originally supposed to arrive on October 13 but was delayed to December 7, possibly due to the issues mentioned or even worse ones that have since been resolved. For those who've never owned a gaming console before the Switch, and don't plan on buying another one, this might still be a way to experience these classics. However, it is undeniably a letdown. Perhaps the Arkham Trilogy will run better on the rumored Switch 2.
