A Shocking Revelation in the Chess World

Last September, the chess community was shaken by a scandal when previous world champion, Magnus Carlsen, suggested that his rival, grandmaster Hans Niemann, had cheated to defeat him at the Sinquefield Cup held in St. Louis, Missouri. A peculiar theory surrounding this scandal has now been put to the test by some British YouTubers: Can someone actually use a certain intimate device and a computer to outsmart a superior chess player? The answer, surprisingly, is yes.

Unusual Experiment by British YouTubers

A video recently released by the YouTube channel Josh & Archie demonstrated a novice challenging a grandmaster with the assistance of a chess computer. The instructions were transmitted via a smartphone-controlled device. Josh Pieters and Archie Manners, the channel's co-hosts, are known for their celebrity pranks and political group stunts. They developed a code to guide the player's moves. Manners observed a chess computer simulation and relayed instructions to Pieters, who was in a mock studio playing against grandmaster Daniel Fernandez, ranked 481 globally.

How the Experiment Worked

The code was quite straightforward. Starting from the 1a square each time, Pieters would send one set of signals to indicate the location of the piece to be moved and then the square it should move to. Fernandez was under the impression that he was participating in a TV show about mastering a skill in three months. As he watched the chess computer analyze Fernandez’s moves, Manners discovered that Fernandez had played flawlessly until about the 30th minute. At this point, the program was able to exploit a small mistake and eventually checkmate him.

The Origin of the Theory

This unconventional theory of chess cheating was first mentioned during a Chessbrah Twitch stream last September. The hosts humorously suggested how Niemann could have smuggled a device into his match without detection. While the idea was never taken seriously, it underscored how unfounded Carlsen’s cheating allegations appeared at the time. A later report revealed Niemann's past online cheating, leading to legal battles and a settlement, but no evidence of cheating in person was ever found. Niemann, however, did receive thorough pat downs at subsequent tournaments.

Pop Culture Impact

The theory also inspired an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where the character Frank Reynolds, enacted by Danny DeVito, essentially replicated the Josh & Archie channel's experiment. Several other YouTubers have also explored the theory. Piers Morgan even asked Niemann on live TV last month if he ever used the device to cheat. Niemann responded, "Your curiosity is a bit concerning, you know–maybe you’re personally interested, but I can tell you, no."

Final Thoughts

Whether Niemann did use such a method to cheat remains unknown, but it is now clear that it could have been a possibility.
