Video Game Industry Layoffs: A Growing Trend

In recent years, layoffs in the video game industry have sadly become a regular occurrence. In 2023, there were almost weekly layoffs across the sector. By the end of the year, over 6,000 jobs had been lost in video game-related companies, including publishers and developers.

Unfortunately, the first few weeks of 2024 suggest that this year could be even worse.

Most were not expecting 2024 to be much better, but the extent of the layoffs has been surprising. The year has begun with a series of significant layoffs, indicating that the situation is not improving. At Streamers Visuals, we'll be keeping an eye on the layoffs throughout the year. Recent Layoffs

On January 4, 2024, the first known layoffs of the year occurred at VR games developer Archiact. The company, recognized for its Doom 3 VR port, announced on social media that an unspecified number of staff had been let go.

Later, on January 5, 2024, it was confirmed that Bossa Studios had laid off 19 people, mostly in QA and production roles.

The first major layoffs of the year were reported by Reuters on January 8, 2024. Unity Software announced plans to cut nearly 25% of its staff, totaling around 1,800 people.

On January 9, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Twitch was preparing to lay off about 35% of its total staff, or around 500 employees, by the end of January.

Mobile game publisher and developer Playtika plans to lay off up to 400 employees, which is about 10% of the company’s total workforce, as reported by CTech on January 11, 2024.

Discord, the popular video game chat software developer, was planning to lay off around 17% of the company’s total staff, as reported by The Verge on January 11, 2024.
