Square Enix Encounters Rocky Waters Following Financial Slump and Troubled Game Releases

Despite the consistent quality and fan popularity of certain titles such as Final Fantasy XIV, Square Enix finds itself in an unfavorable position due to financial losses and troubled game launches. The Tokyo-based publisher has been criticized for its approach to game development, following subpar releases and missed sales targets that have led to a significant drop in stock value.

Struggles with Recent Final Fantasy Titles and Other Games

One example of a game that fell short of expectations is the much-anticipated Final Fantasy XVI. This title, along with others from the series, has struggled to meet sales goals and has been released in less-than-ideal conditions. This isn't a unique problem for Square Enix, however. Games outside the Final Fantasy realm have experienced similar issues, with large-scale projects like Forspoken underperforming in sales and receiving lukewarm reviews. Other titles, like Marvel’s Avengers, have failed to establish solid footing in the live service market, resulting in an impending shutdown.

Change in Strategy

According to recent reports, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryi plans to minimize the production of smaller titles and reduce outsourcing, aiming to concentrate on large-budget games with the potential to enhance the company's profitability. While shifting focus away from hastily produced games seems like a wise decision, the company's approach to game development has been criticized. Producers have complete control over the scope and direction of projects, and there’s a shortage of proper documentation and team structure.

Challenging Road to Recovery

For those who closely follow Square Enix's game development, these issues may not be surprising. Despite the company's intentions to recover, challenges still remain. As the company's chief accounting officer stated earlier this year, "in light of current conditions [...] this will not be easy."
