The PlayStation 5 Achieves Remarkable Sales in Japan

Recent data reveals that the PlayStation 5 has been a commercial success in Japan, securing its position as the second highest-selling console in 2023, falling behind only Nintendo's Switch.

What's more, the PS5 has outperformed all PlayStation console sales since the release of the PS2 in 2004. This suggests that the console has become more accessible to consumers in 2023 compared to previous years.

PlayStation 5 vs. Other Consoles

According to a sales report released by Famitsu on January 12, the top-selling console in Japan in 2023 was the six-year-old Switch. Despite a slight drop in sales, it's impressive to see an older console still leading the market with such high numbers.

Following closely behind the Switch is Sony's PS5, which sold 2.58 million units in 2023. While not as high as the Switch's sales, it's a significant increase from the PS5's total sales in 2022, which were only 1.15 million.

PlayStation's Historical Performance

Interestingly, this is the best a PlayStation console has performed in Japan since 2004. Back then, the PS2 managed to sell approximately 2.59 million units. Following that, the sales of the PS2, PS3, and PSP couldn't quite reach that peak.

Comparatively, the sales of Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S consoles in Japan were quite low. The Xbox Series X/S only managed to sell 141,712 units in Japan in 2023, with total lifetime sales in Japan at a meager 540,107.

It's clear that despite the age of the console, Switch games continue to dominate the market in Japan.
