netflix delays the witcher movie to february 2025

Netflix has announced that its animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, has been postponed from late 2024 to February 11, 2025.

This announcement was made during Netflix's Geeked Week. They also shared a brief promotional video and a clip from the upcoming film.

Doug Cockle, the English voice of Geralt of Rivia in the video games and now in Sirens of the Deep, introduces a scene where Geralt and Jaskier (played by Joey Batey) chat around a campfire.

About the Film

Sirens of the Deep is based on the short story A Little Sacrifice. It takes place around 1244 in the Witcher world, shortly after the first meeting between Geralt and Yennefer in episode 5 of season 1 of the Netflix series, but more than 20 years before the main saga starts in season 2.

The heartbroken Geralt, after his first breakup with Yennefer, travels the continent with Dandelion before meeting the rival troubadour, Essi. The trio gets involved in a lover's quarrel between a prince and a mermaid, which promises to be much more intense in Netflix's adaptation.

Key Highlights

  • Doug Cockle and Joey Batey voice Geralt and Jaskier.

  • Set in 1244, in the Witcher world.
  • Geralt and Dandelion meet rival troubadour Essi.

Character Insights

Yennefer is not directly named in the trailer, but Jaskier refers to her as a "demon with jet-black hair, hollow eyes, and a serpent's tongue," encouraging Geralt to explore a romantic relationship with Essi instead.

Sirens of the Deep has been rumored for a long time, with subtle teases for the film hidden in The Witcher Season 3. A song titled A Little Sacrifice, performed by Ciri (Freya Allen), told the story of the short story, though it had nothing to do with the main events of the series.

Doug Cockle mentioned that transitioning from video games to the Netflix film was comfortable, but he struggled with speaking the Merfolk language.

"It's difficult because the Merfolk are described in the books as having a sing-song voice, and Geralt is anything but that," Cockle said. "The challenge was to bring that singing quality into Geralt's gruff and somewhat monotone voice."
