James Gunn shared that Krypto's character was inspired by his own dog, Ozu. Gunn and his wife, actress Jennifer Holland, adopted Ozu from a challenging situation where he lived with 60 other dogs and had never interacted with humans. Ozu quickly made an impact on their lives, even causing a bit of chaos at home.
"He settled in and destroyed our house, shoes, furniture - he even ate my laptop," Gunn humorously recounted. The idea of Ozu having superpowers sparked the creation of Krypto's character in the script, transforming both the story and Gunn's life.
Krypto's Journey to the Big Screen
Krypto has been a staple in Superman lore since 1955, appearing in "Adventure Comics #210." Surprisingly, he has never been featured in any live-action Superman films until now. However, Krypto starred in the animated movie "DC League of Super-Pets" in 2022, voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and appeared in TV series like "Titans" and "Smallville."
