Ghost of Tsushima Sequel: New Details Revealed!
After four years, Sucker Punch Productions has finally announced the much-anticipated sequel to its 2020 samurai open-world game, Ghost of Tsushima. The new game, titled Ghost of Ytei, was revealed during the September State of Play with a stunning three-minute trailer. This PlayStation 5 exclusive promises to deliver a captivating story and breathtaking visuals. Let's dive into everything we know about Ghost of Ytei so far.
New Protagonist: Atsu
One of the biggest reveals is that Ghost of Ytei will not follow Jin Sakai, the protagonist of Ghost of Tsushima. Instead, the sequel takes place over 300 years later, in 1603, and stars a new hero: a female samurai named Atsu. The story revolves around Atsu engaging in underdog vengeance.
Atsu is portrayed by actor Erika Ishii, known for their work in Dimension 20, Apex Legends, and the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
New Setting: Mount Ytei
As the name suggests, Ghost of Ytei takes place in the areas surrounding Mount Ytei, a mountain located on the island of Ezo, known today as Hokkaido. This northern island was not part of Japan until the 1800s, making the setting both geographically and historically distinct from the original game.
Sucker Punch's creative directors, Nate Fox and Jason Connell, were inspired by their visits to Mount Ytei and Shiretoko National Park in Hokkaido. The park's beautiful yet dangerous scenery influenced the game's design.
Open-World Exploration
Ghost of Ytei will continue the open-world exploration that fans loved in Ghost of Tsushima. The trailer shows Atsu traveling through vast areas on horseback, including open fields, snowy mountains, and wartorn villages. The game will feature varied weather and aesthetics, ensuring that the stunning environmental design remains a key element.
Atsu's Canine Companion
In an interesting twist, Atsu will have a canine companion. The trailer shows a wolf initially meeting Atsu with aggression, but eventually running off as if chasing the wind. This wolf appears to be an ally, mirroring Atsu's hunting of her targets. Fans are already hoping that Sucker Punch will allow them to interact with this giant dog.
Release Date
Sucker Punch has confirmed that Ghost of Ytei will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, set to launch in 2025. While no specific release window has been provided, this will be the studio's first game made exclusively for the PS5.
