What is Tempering?
Tempering is a new system in Diablo IV that replaces the old item upgrading mechanic. Unlike the previous system, which offered minor stat boosts, Tempering allows you to add unique combat or ability modifiers to your items. This feature is less powerful and less expensive than the Legendary Affix system, and it can be applied to lower rarity items as well.
How to Use Tempering
To start Tempering your equipment, head to the Blacksmith. Click on the fourth tab, marked by a lone anvil, to access the Tempering menu. Here, you can drag and drop an item to see the available Tempering options.

- Mobility
- Resource
These categories are limited by item slot. For example, if you want to enhance a weapon, you'll choose between the Weapons and Offensive options. The specific buff you receive is random, as is typical in Diablo games.
Tempering Pools
The Offensive pool contains several generic options available for every class, such as increasing damage by a percentage or enhancing Ultimate damage. There are also class-specific options, like the Spiritborn's Tempering recipes, which can boost specific Class Abilities.
Once you choose a pool, the Material Cost will be displayed. Materials are gained by salvaging unwanted items at the Blacksmith. Click "Temper Item" to receive a randomly selected bonus from the chosen pool.
What If You Don't Like Your Bonus?
If the bonus you receive isn't to your liking, you can Temper again to reroll for a better option. However, you can only reroll five times. The Blacksmith will show how many rerolls are left before you spend your resources.
Expanding Your Tempering Options
To get more Tempering options, continue playing the game. Tempering recipes can drop from enemies like other loot. Use them to add new bonus pools to your Blacksmith Tempering menu, allowing for more tailored enhancements.
