The 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

This week marks a significant milestone in the gaming world - the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. First introduced in 1998, this Nintendo 64 classic set the standard for future generations of the series until the open-world structure of Breath of the Wild revolutionized it in 2017.

A Tribute to the Classic

In honor of Ocarina of Time's quarter-century, popular Zelda YouTuber and animator, RwanLink, has developed a short film using Unreal Engine 5. The film reinterprets locations from the game's initial stages in the unique animation style of Studio Ghibli, and the result is quite impressive.

Exploring Castle Town

The video primarily explores Castle Town, the residential area in front of Princess Zelda's castle. The location is known for its cheerful atmosphere before the storyline takes a darker turn. However, RwanLink's video doesn't delve into that. Instead, it portrays Link interacting with the locals and offers only a fleeting glimpse of Zelda and series villain Ganondorf. The film also takes some creative liberties, such as showing Fi dancing on the Pedestal of Time.

Future Perspectives

While the video only subtly hints at the darker aspects of Ocarina of Time, it would be interesting to see key moments like the time-skip or the epic battle with Ganondorf rendered in this style. This video is a departure from RwanLink's other Zelda animations, which typically favor a more realistic style over the cel-shaded look seen here.

A Ghibli-Style Zelda Movie: A Dream or Reality?

While a Ghibli-style Zelda movie might seem like a pipe dream, Nintendo has confirmed it's working on a live-action film in partnership with Avi Arad. Arad is the founder of Marvel Studios and has producer credits on a range of films from the comic book company's portfolio, from the original Iron Man to the Spider-Verse series. Despite his Marvel ties, Arad has also worked on other projects, including the middling Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and the upcoming Borderlands adaptation.

Nintendo's Success in Animated Space

Although Zelda might not be getting the animated treatment, Nintendo has seen considerable success in the animated space this year with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite mixed reviews, the film managed to rake in a significant amount at the box office.
