Matthew Perks, a YouTuber known for his DIY projects, showcased his latest feat in a video. He took a regular PlayStation 5 console and slimmed it down significantly, while maintaining its cooling efficiency. However, this modification voided his warranty.

What's amazing about this build is how Perks managed to retain all the base components of a PS5 in such a thin form. The console uses the actual motherboard, which, aside from the power supply, is all that's needed for the console to function as a PS5 when connected to a display. As for the outer shell, it remained unchanged, but there have been significant internal changes to the original PlayStation 5 throughout its nearly four-year lifespan.
Reengineering the Heat Sink and Fan Design
Perks had to redesign the heat sink and fan from scratch. After doing so, he found that the CPU only reached about 42 degrees Celsius, even with the fans running at full speed. Thus, the console could easily reach its normal operating temperature of 55-60 degrees Celsius under full load without creating excessive fan noise.
Features of the Modified PlayStation 5
Instead of an LCD panel, Perks opted for a 14-inch, 4K OLED display from a damaged Alienware laptop. He also added two 5-watt drivers on a miniature subwoofer for the sound, which is emitted from two stereo side speakers. The new device still requires a wired connection, but it only needs to be set up near an outlet to enjoy the full capability of the PlayStation.
Challenges in the Current Handheld Console Market
While this revamped PlayStation 5 is impressive, it's not exactly what one might expect from today's handheld consoles, which are smaller and less capable. Sony's last attempt at portable gaming, the PlayStation Portal, was a streaming-only device that didn't meet all the expectations of today's portable gaming paradigm. Despite its larger size, Perks' product offers a better multiplayer experience than the typical small, 7-inch screen.
