House of the Dragon Season 2 Finale Questions Answered

The final episode of House of the Dragon season 2 aired last night, leaving viewers with lingering questions.

There were pacing issues this season, likely due to the adaptation of George R. R. Martin's novel, Fire & Blood.

The events during this "dance of dragons" are shocking and depressing, and the showrunners seem to want to drag this out before breaking our hearts.

If you walked away from the finale confused or uncertain about the next season, don't worry. Here are your biggest questions answered. Obviously, spoilers abound.

Why Did Daemon Bend the Knee?

The entire season teased that Daemon (Matt Smith) might betray his wife, Rhaenyra.

Throughout his time at Harrenhal, he's plagued with twisted visions, including one where he makes love to his own mother and another where a young Rhaenyra chides him for his treatment of her.

As the season progressed, it became clear that his desire for the crown was dwindling.

In his final vision, he sees far into the future, validating Viserys' decision to name Rhaenyra his heir. This vision convinces him to remain loyal.

In the book, Daemon fights loyally on Rhaenyra's side in an important battle, and the showrunners likely wanted to end up there.

Why Did Aemond Destroy Sharp Point?

Aemond destroyed Sharp Point because he's a spiteful brat with mommy issues.

Sharp Point has no strategic advantage in the war but is close to Dragonstone. He likely destroyed it in a fiery temper tantrum after seeing how many dragons Rhaenyra has.

Why Did Aegon Leave King's Landing?

Aegon leaving King's Landing could be seen as an abdication of the throne.

However, since Aemond is already the de facto leader, Larys suggests Aegon get out before his brother tries to kill him.

Aegon will play a major role in the coming events.

Where Is Otto Hightower?

Otto Hightower is seen behind bars in a montage at the end of the episode.

He was last seen leaving King's Landing after being sacked as Hand of the King.

Aemond told Larys to fetch him, and Alicent was worried he wasn't responding to her letters. He was captured, likely by someone from Team Black.

Is Criston Cole Good Again?

No, Criston Cole is still an asshole.

He dropped the sanctimonious act after Alicent's brother revealed his affair, but he's still an asshole.

Will Rhaena Tame That Dragon?

Rhaena failed to tame a dragon earlier, but the episode ends with her approaching a dragon in the Vale.

It's likely that Rhaena is replacing Nettles, a character in the book who tames Sheepstealer. So, yes, Rhaena will likely be on dragonback in season 3.

A Son for a Son

This doesn't happen in the book but is a clever addition by the showrunners.

Alicent struggles with the horrors she has inadvertently put in place and appeals to Rhaenyra. They both understand the dangers of out-of-control men.

Alicent tells Rhaenyra that once she takes the throne, the senseless war must end. If Aegon refuses to bend the knee, Rhaenyra must be okay with beheading him.

Who Is That Dragon at the End and Who Is Riding It?

A brief scene shows a dragon soaring over troops in Oldtown. That's Tessarion, belonging to Daeron Targaryen, Alicent's youngest son.

The showrunners keep the camera far from Tessarion, likely because they haven't cast Daeron yet.

Where Does Everyone End Up?

Battle is near, and it's going to escalate into the horrors expected from a Game of Thrones series.

Rhaenyra, her new dragon riders, and Daemon are heading towards King's Landing, while Aegon is heading away from it.

Tyland Lannister is crossing the narrow sea to fight Corlys Velaryon, who is blockading Blackwater Bay, causing supply issues for King's Landing.

The Starks have come down from Winterfell and are marching through The Twins.

War is on the horizon, and remember what Rhaenys said: "There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin, and no war so bloody as a war between dragons."
