In recent years, we've seen a surge of RPGs from the original PlayStation making their comeback on modern platforms. Some have been good, others have been less impressive. But none have truly done justice to their source material until the release of Star Ocean The Second Story R.

Star Ocean The Second Story R: A Remake Like No Other

Set to release on November 2 on PS5, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch, Star Ocean The Second Story R is a spectacular renovation of Tri-Ace’s 1998 classic. It combines sci-fi space exploration and medieval fantasy tropes, enhancing visuals, adding voice acting, and introducing new quality-of-life improvements and gameplay tweaks.

This remake has rekindled my love for one of my favorite games and proves that a retro remake can enhance the original while still retaining the style and charm that made it so special in the first place.

Immerse Yourself in a Rich and Diverse World

You can choose to play as either Claude, a starship captain's son stranded on a medieval planet, or Rena, a magical elf-like orphan. Together, they investigate a mysterious asteroid that has unleashed monsters across the land.

As you travel across the world and eventually to a futuristic sister-planet, you can recruit various characters to your party. The story might not always be memorable, but it does lead to some truly interesting and weird places.

Experience Over a Hundred Distinct Endings

The game boasts over a hundred distinct endings, depending on who you recruit and your relationships with them. Standard dungeon crawling and button-mashing combat are complemented by secondary skill systems that let you do everything from crafting weapons to playing in an orchestra.

I’m 10 hours into the game on Switch so far and everything is as I remember it, just much prettier, more streamlined, and more engaging than either the original game or its 2009 PSP remaster.

A PS1 Classic Reimagined

Star Ocean: The Second Story’s sprite pixel art returns with an HD touchup for characters, NPCs, and enemies, but environments and backgrounds have been overhauled with a beautiful new 2.5HD look.

They may not always retain the vibrant colors and compositions of the original pre-rendered scenes, but they certainly add a new level of depth and beauty to the game.
