The latest gaming consoles like the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and even the Nintendo Switch come equipped with impressive capture features. If you want to freeze a memorable gaming moment in a screenshot, there's a button for that. Recording lengthy clips on Xbox and PlayStation is a breeze. Sharing these images and videos with your friends is even simpler. But sometimes, you might accidentally share content that you'd rather keep private.
Video Sharing on Social Media
Sharing the best reveals from a popular gaming event or a video of your latest gaming achievement has never been easier. With just a few clicks, you can share your gaming highlights on Facebook, Twitter, Email, Reddit, or simply by Link.
Recent Controversy Surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3
2023's RPG sensation, Baldur’s Gate 3, recently stirred up some controversy due to its explicit content. Players who captured and uploaded intimate scenes from the game found themselves banned from the Xbox network's safety services. While these bans are being reversed, it serves as a reminder to be mindful of the content you share from games like The Witcher 3, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077, and even Grand Theft Auto V, which feature varying degrees of explicit content.
Changing Your Image Sharing Settings on Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One
Here's how you can alter who can see your images on Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One:
Changing Your Capture Settings
First, go to the Settings option from the top-centered cog wheel on your Xbox’s dashboard. Navigate to “Account” and select “Privacy & online safety”. Then select Xbox privacy. Here, you'll find a variety of default settings and an option to select “View details & customize”. Select this and navigate to “Game content.”
Setting Your Capture Privacy
The second option, “Others can see your captures on Xbox,” should be set to “Only me” for the most privacy, “Friends,” if you want to share a capture with your friends, and “Everyone on the internet” if you want to share your captures with the entire online community.
Community Creations Settings
The next option, “You can see and upload community creations,” gives you three settings. The most restrictive is “Block,” which stops you from uploading community creations and also from viewing them.
Sharing Outside of Xbox
In the privacy settings, you can also select “Sharing outside of Xbox” to determine who can see and share content you create outside of the Xbox network.
Stopping Automatic Uploads to the Xbox Network
In the main Settings menu, go to “Preferences” and select “Capture & share.” Here, you can set whether you want to take captures at all. You can disable automatic uploads to the Xbox network under “Automatic uploads,” as well as OneDrive.
Note that if you want to back up screenshots off your Xbox, you'll have to do so manually.
