Unmasking Bob: The Mystery Hero in Marvel's Thunderbolts
If you've been keeping up with Marvel's TV shows and movies, you might have seen the new Thunderbolts trailer. This upcoming MCU film brings back several B-tier characters, with Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova leading the pack. But there's one new face you might not recognize: Bob. So, who is Bob, and why is he important?
Meet Bob: Marvel's Sentry
Bob, played by Lewis Pullman, appears briefly in the trailer. He is actually the comic character Sentry. Created in 2000 by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, Sentry is Marvel's answer to Superman. He's an indestructible man with super speed, super strength, flight, and more.
But Bob, also known as Robert Reynolds, has more depth than just being a Superman clone. His backstory is pretty unique.
The Origin of Sentry
Sentry's history goes way back in Marvel's timeline, even before the Fantastic Four. He became friends with big names like the Avengers and Spider-Man. Unlike Superman, whose powers come from his alien origin, Sentry got his powers from a failed attempt to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that made Captain America.
During his time as a hero, Sentry often fought his archenemy, Void. To defeat Void, Sentry had to stop using his own powers. He even wiped the memories of everyone, including himself, to erase any knowledge of his existence.
Bob's Role in Thunderbolts
In the Thunderbolts trailer, Bob appears to be locked in a secret government facility. The Thunderbolts break into this facility, unaware of what's inside. Later, we see Bob uninjured despite his clothes being riddled with bullet holes. This all but confirms that Lewis Pullman's Bob is indeed Sentry.
The film seems to position Bob as a living superweapon. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, will likely try to control or capture him using the Thunderbolts. However, the team will probably develop a conscience and team up with Bob to fight against Valentina.
What to Expect
Thunderbolts is set to release on May 2, 2025. The movie looks like Marvel's take on the Suicide Squad, with a twist. Bob could end up joining the Dark Avengers, a storyline explored in the comics. It will be exciting to see Lewis Pullman's take on Sentry and Florence Pugh leading a Marvel project.
