Create Your Dream Hero in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

After ten long years, we are now just over a month away from playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard. We've spent seven hours with the game, starting from the prologue and exploring various save points. As long-time fans, we can confidently say that the wait has been worth it. The Veilguard has not disappointed us so far.

Become the Hero You Always Wanted to Be

We could talk about the combat, the stunning environments, or the joy of seeing familiar faces like Varric and Solas. But let's start with the character creator. It’s mind-blowing! There are so many options, especially for hair.

Dragon Age: Inquisition had limited character creation options. But Veilguard takes it to the next level. There are 30 hairstyle options for Qunari and 88 for non-Qunari. The textures are diverse, from smooth hair to 4C curls. We were particularly drawn to a long, swaying braid.

Qunari Horns and Customization

The Qunari horns have also seen a massive upgrade. With 49 unique styles, you can go from large and imposing to decorative or asymmetrical. Although their foreheads might look odd, you quickly get used to it. This is only the second game in the series where you can play as a Qunari, so the unique design feels intentional.

All aspects of your Rook are customizable, including facial asymmetry. You can adjust everything from head shape to skin tone and even add vitiligo. The introduction of body diversity is a game-changer. You can choose from various presets for each of the four races, each with different muscle and fat distributions.

Combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Combat in Veilguard is a refreshing change from DA:I. Our favorite class has always been the mage. The new combat style for mages includes an orb and dagger for close combat. It’s perfect for those who love magic and melee.

During our preview, we played through the prologue and parts of Act 1. This gave us a good sense of Rook and their companions' progression as fighters. While you can’t control your companions directly, you can strategize with them. They call out when they’ve replenished mana or stamina, and the ability wheel suggests combos.

Ultimate Abilities and Class Features

Each class has its own ultimate ability and a ranged attack. For warriors, this means throwing their shield like a giant boomerang. We’ve always played Dragon Age for the story, but the new combat system is a lot of fun. There’s a learning curve, but the game offers five difficulty levels to suit your preference.

The Return to Thedas

The Veilguard feels like a return to form for the series. Seeing familiar faces and exploring the world of Thedas again is exhilarating. Moving north, you get a sense of discovery similar to Inquisition. Pay attention to your surroundings; there are environmental puzzles and breathtaking landscapes.

One standout location is an underwater prison called the Ossuary. The design alone makes it one of the most memorable moments in any Dragon Age game.

Even after hours of gameplay, we felt like we could play for many more. We are optimistic about Dragon Age: The Veilguard and look forward to exploring it further.
