Lego Leia Gets a Modest Makeover and Fans Have Opinions

Last week, Lego officially unveiled its next big Star Wars UCS set, the $500 Jabba's Barge. This set is geared toward collectors and adults and includes a series of small Lego minifig characters like R2-D2, Jabba the Hutt, and Bib Fortuna. However, it's the new Slave Leia minifig that has sparked some odd discussions online.

What's New with the Leia Minifig?

Over the years, we've seen a few Lego versions of Leia from the 1983 film "Star Wars: Return of The Jedi." This Leia, often referred to as Slave Leia, is known for her small, revealing metal bikini and loincloth skirt. Fans have loved this version, but it has also led to a lot of debates.

Since Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, there has been a decrease in how often Slave Leia appeared in merchandise and media. The new Lego set includes a version of the metal bikini Leia, but she's showing less plastic skin this time.

Fan Reactions

On September 21, the Lego news and fansite Brickset tweeted images comparing the 2013 Leia to the new 2024 Leia. The new Leia has a larger skirt that covers her entire upper legs, eliminating the side thighs or oddly nude behind.

The reactions have been mixed:

  • Some people are mocking or parodying those upset about the change.
  • Others are jokingly blaming the concept of "woke" for the figure's covered thighs.
  • Some fans seem genuinely upset, suggesting Disney is trying to erase history.
  • Others are shouting about censorship.

Is It a Joke or Genuine Concern?

It's hard to tell how many of these reactions are real and how many are jokes. In 2024, it's easy to see some people being mad about a less sexy Lego minifig. Every week, it seems a group of online personalities yell about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) changes in fictional characters.

We have long crossed the line when it comes to what certain people online will scream about. It's genuinely hard to tell if a joke is a joke or if someone is seriously upset about Leia's new look.

Final Thoughts

Personally, I think the new Leia looks fine. It was always weird that her skirt didn't cover her rear as it does in the film. While the new skirt might not be entirely accurate, it looks better than the old figure, which also didn't have a perfectly accurate loincloth design.

Now, I'm going to stop writing about this and try to enjoy my life. Try to feel something again.
