Highlighting the Importance of Representation in Gaming
Ever since 1987, when I discovered the character Samus Aran, a female intergalactic bounty hunter, I realized the importance of representation in video games. It was a thrill to see a woman as a hero in a game, which was quite rare at the time.
Fast forward to today, video games have become a significant part of our culture. The influential advocacy organization GLAAD has released a comprehensive report on LGBTQ representation in games. The report suggests that video games hold a crucial role in the lives of many queer players, particularly the youth. However, it also highlights the industry's shortcomings in representing and reaching these players.
Video Games and the Queer Community
GLAAD's report reveals some interesting and important statistics. A striking finding is that 17 percent of active gamers identify as LGBTQ. However, only a meager 2 percent of games on major PC and console storefronts have LGBTQ content. This suggests that games featuring queer characters or storylines are still incredibly rare.
While some influential games are featuring queer and trans characters, it might be easy to assume that LGBTQ representation in games is more common than it is. The reality is, the industry might still be falling short of adequately reflecting the LGBTQ player base.
Video Games as a Safe Haven for Queer Players
The data shows that many queer players find video games to be a safe haven. For those living in states where anti-LGBTQ legislation has been introduced, 55 percent feel more accepted in the gaming community than in their local public areas. Moreover, 65 percent of these players depend on games to get them through tough times, and a staggering 75 percent say that games allow them to express themselves in ways they don't feel comfortable doing in the real world.
Final Thoughts
The gaming industry has made some strides in representation, but there is still a long way to go. The importance of representation in games cannot be overstated, and it's crucial that the industry continues to work on reflecting its diverse player base.
