A recent press release following the announcement of the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion pack confirmed that the open-world death game has sold a staggering 23 million copies worldwide.

In a press release dated February 22, Bandai Namco made it clear that the figure comprises both digital and physical sales from all distributors, including Steam. The last update on Elden Ring’s sales was a year ago when it was announced that the game had sold 20 million copies in a year. An extra three million copies since then represents strong, steady sales for a game that’s over a year out from its initial release.

Comparison with Other Games

In comparison, 2023's Hogwarts Legacy sold 24 million copies, while Tears of the Kingdom sold 19.5 million copies in just four months. While it may have taken Elden Ring some time to reach—and even surpass—these numbers, the imminent release of Shadow of the Erdtree is expected to give Elden Ring’s sales a significant boost.

Speaking of Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoft unveiled it on February 21, a year after its initial announcement. The DLC, focusing on Malenia’s twin brother Miquella, takes players to the Shadowland. Gamers can expect new areas, enemies, and weapons in a world as vast as the Limgrave region in the base game. The Shadow of the Erdtree is set to launch on June 21 for PC, PS4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
