As a child of the 90s, my fascination with Disney was a given. I remember watching Mulan on repeat when it first came out on VHS. However, my interest wasn't only limited to Disney, I was also captivated by Final Fantasy. In fact, I played Final Fantasy VII at least four times in a year after I was first introduced to it.
Imagine my excitement when I saw a video game featuring Donald Duck, Goofy, and a protagonist that bore a striking resemblance to Cloud Strife. At the age of 11, I was left in awe. Little did I know that this game, Kingdom Hearts 3, would have such a profound impact on me 17 years and 10 games later.

Kingdom Hearts 3: A Rollercoaster of Emotions
Kingdom Hearts 3 is not without its flaws. The quality of the Disney worlds is inconsistent, and the story is heavily concentrated in the final third. However, the last five hours of the game are among my favorite endings in any video game, filled with an incredible amount of catharsis and emotional payoff. The narrative beats in Kingdom Hearts 3 remind me a lot of Toy Story 3, with its sense of finality, acceptance, and moving on.
Despite the game meandering for the first thirty hours, everything intensifies once you reach the Keyblade Graveyard. The final stretch answers numerous lore questions, but what really stands out is the thematic storytelling and the resolution of every major character's plotline.
The Heart of Kingdom Hearts 3: Sora
At the center of it all is Sora, the character that binds everyone and everything in the series together. He's the dense but kindhearted boy that everyone grows to love, the hero that always puts on a brave face in the face of adversity. That's precisely what makes the first step of the final battle so gut-wrenching, as the party loses to Xehanort's forces in The Badlands.
The initial battle at The Badlands results in the "good guys" being eliminated one by one, triggering a mental breakdown in Sora unlike anything the series has ever shown. It's a distressing moment for a series that's generally light-hearted, even in its darkest moments. Sora's quiet sobs are heartrending, but they also reflect the journey of growing up.
Sora has always believed that his powers come from his connection to others. Similarly, during our adolescent and teenage years, we often fixate on friendships, groups, and the wishes of our parents. When all that's stripped away, stepping out into the world on our own can be incredibly daunting. This single moment encapsulates what makes Kingdom Hearts 3 truly special.
